My Dissertation Project

Inbetween
The Individual Experience of Multiple Belongings in Tension

My project explores inbetweenness as an affective existential experience. Mobility can lead individuals to adapt to social contexts markedly different from their milieus of origin. Over time, some “become other”, encountering tensions between their multiple forms of life that give rise to a sense of inbetweenness. Based on nine months of ethnographic fieldwork with three interlocutors in Delhi, this thesis engages with anthropological debates on belonging, becoming, mobility and affect. Drawing on participant observation, narrative-biographic and semi-structured interviews, it examines how inbetweenness emerges, is felt, and is negotiated – and what may be gained or challenged from this social position. The study’s protagonists straddle multiple belongings shaped primarily – but not exclusively – by caste, religion and “cultural belonging”, respectively. This dissertation offers a systematic ethnographic analysis of inbetweenness as an affective, existential experience shaped by mobility and marked by tensions. It moves beyond fixed categories of social identity to show how people inhabit, navigate and emotionally experience multiple belongings.
