When Relationships End — Stories from the Museum of Broken Relationships

What happens to the gifts, letters, and everyday objects that outlive a relationship? How do choices to keep, discard, or donate these once cherished objects reflect social values? And how does their meaning change as they move from private memory into public storytelling? In this Zethnopod episode we speak with Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić, founders of the Museum of Broken Relationships, about how intimate objects become part of a public archive of love, loss, and memory. Together with anthropologist Adam Drazin, we explore what these items reveal about material culture, emotional attachment, and the shifting meanings of things.

“Haven’t I heard that before?” Chris McGuinness discussing authorship in music production

A charismatic voice featured in several pop songs, its singer unknown – or is he? In this Zethnopod episode ethnomusicologist Chris McGuinness traces a vocal snippet back to the sample library it was initially recorded for and follows the mysterious voice all the way to a village in Punjab, India. Thereby, he speaks about differing understandings of authorship in music production, global power dynamics and deceased voices having “their say” in music creation today.

InBetween - An anecdotal audio collage

InBetween was an audio experiment between 2019-2022 somewhere
between Zürich, Switzerland and Delhi, India.

It was a personal podcast documenting my life between Zürich and Delhi in colorful audio collages narrating the little stories, events and thoughts I encountered in between.

It partly was an anthropological podcast documenting the beginning of my PhD project, especially the initial search for a topic. It aimed to render anthropological thought and work more accessible (and understandable) to listeners without academic background. It tried to illustrate, transparently, the joys, struggles, and insecurities of research – components of academic work that all too often are left unmentioned in the polished books and smooth articles produced.

Towards the end, it was an interview podcast featuring conversations about the phenomenon of “feeling in between” by different people, permitting insight into their lives and thoughts.

In short, inBetween was a love story between one person, two continents, everything in between and the medium audio, told anecdote by anecdote. Episodes are available in German and English.
